AWARD-WINNING MILITARY FAMILY SUPPORT

With 10 of our 17 schools earning the prestigious Purple Star Designation from the NC Department of Public Instruction, Lee County Schools continue to lead in providing exceptional, personalized support for military-connected families and students.

From trained staff to help families navigate transfers and mid-year moves, to compassionate counselors and mental health staff who facilitate peer groups for students coping with deployments or transitions, our Purple Star Schools are committed to going above and beyond to serve those who sacrifice for our nation.

That's what makes today's Veterans' Day Parade at J. Glenn Edwards Elementary especially meaningful. It's a celebration not only of our veterans, but also of the deep commitment our schools have to ensuring that every student - especially those from military families - has the support to thrive.

COMMUNITY & SUPPORT AT WLMS

When international teacher Crystal Tapper joined the West Lee Middle School team last year through the Participate Learning exchange program, she found more than a new classroom - she found family.

Now in her seventh year of teaching and her second year in the U.S., Ms. Tapper brings her vibrant Jamaican culture into her sixth grade science and math classes, blending hard work, fun, and encouragement.

"The great thing at this school is I can integrate my culture because the environment is welcoming and we get a chance to learn how to respect and encourage one another. Part of Jamaican culture is motivating each other even when things are hard. We find fun in things, and I believe that helps students in my classroom."

She says the support from her school, coworkers, district and the Sanford community has been incredible.

"Everyone really looks out for each other. You have people you can rely on - people who will be there for you."

Thank you, Ms. Tapper, for bringing your passion, energy, and joy to Lee County Schools! We are so grateful for our international teachers who enrich our schools with culture, care, and community.

This week schools across the district celebrated Red Ribbon Week, a powerful, annual reminder that the choices we make today shape the futures we build tomorrow.

Whether it was through a pajama day, hat day, or wacky-tacky day, like this picture from J. Glenn Edwards, students across the district were reminded that living drug-free isn't just about saying "no" - it is about saying "yes" to opportunity, health and success. Whether it is pursuing a career goal, chasing a dream, or simply being the best version of themselves, staying drug-free helps students stay on the path toward a bright and successful future.

Together, we're building a community where every student can thrive, make positive choices, and follow their future-focused pathway to success.

We are currently experiencing a power outage in the area impacting J.R. Ingram Elementary and West Lee Middle School. Our team is working closely with Duke Energy to determine the cause and expected restoration time.

All students have been served lunch, and given the timing of the outage, we plan to continue the school day as normal. However, any parent who wishes to pick up their child early may do so prior to 2:00 p.m.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep everyone informed and safe.

This week we're shining the spotlight on Mrs. Lora Currin, a dedicated second grade teacher at Broadway Elementary who also serves as the school's PTO President. A proud Broadway resident for the past 20 years, Mrs. Currin says what she loves most about her school is the close-knit community.

"I think it's the family. It feels like a big family. Everyone is so personable. The small town feel here is really great."

For Mrs. Currin, teaching is about relationships, and her passion for serving as both teacher and PTO President comes from a heart that wants to create opportunities for all students to thrive.

"I want these students to have opportunities that they really probably wouldn't have. That's why I teach and serve as PTO President. I want these kids to get the things that they need and deserve. I want them to have positive experiences that they remember that carry them through high school and into their adult lives."

Thank you Mrs. Currin, for the many ways you help make Broadway Elementary a place where students and families feel supported, connected , and inspired!

LOWERING COST & SHORTENING THE RUNWAY. That's the future-focused Central Carolina K-14 Promise Scholarship, a strong College & Career Promise (CCP) partnership between Lee County Schools, Central Carolina Community College, and the Lee County Commissioners.

Students are getting a head start on their college and career goals before they even graduate high school! This year, 967 Lee County students are enrolled in CCP classes at CCCC - that is the largest enrollment across the college's three-county service area. The momentum continues after graduation with 100 graduates from the Class of 2025 taking the next step in their journeys as recipients of the Central Carolina K-14 Promise Scholarship, beginning their college experience at CCCC this fall tuition-free for up to two years while they pursue an associates degree , diploma or career certifications.

These programs are opening doors, saving families money, and preparing students for the careers of tomorrow right here in Lee County. With embedded CCCC advisors like Heather McKenzie at LCHS and Jennifer Babb at SLHS, LCS and CCCC are working hard to support students in our local public schools while providing them the head start that can help make college more affordable and prepare our community's workforce of tomorrow.

Two members of the BT Bullock front office joined the team at the same time some 14 years ago. Today, this dynamic duo forms the backbone of a school community that shines through creativity, teamwork, and heart! Jennifer Stephenson, Data Manager, and Ashley Dossenbach, Bookkeeper, may work behind the scenes, but you will rarely find a major project or event at BT Bullock without their fingerprints all over it. From crafting and organizing special events to tackling daily challenges, they help make the school a warm, welcoming place for students, staff, and families alike.

Stephenson shared what makes her role so rewarding: "I love the kids and the teachers. We just come together as an office team and make things work. Whether it is the crafting and organization for special events or everyday tasks, it's great to work with amazing people doing incredible things for kids and families."

Dossenbach agreed and added that the BT Bullock family has taken on new meaning for her the last few years: "BT Bullock really is a family to me. Being able to experience this school with my daughter has been one of the best things I can imagine. I also love the house system that we have. Getting to be a part of the planning for that and seeing how our work comes together and brings so much happiness to the kids' faces is something I'll never forget."

We are so thankful for dedicated, behind-the-scenes heroes like Jennifer & Ashley. Thank you for all you do to help Lee County Schools thrive every day!

Earlier this month, all eighth grade students in Lee County Schools got a hands on glimpse into the world of healthcare at the Medical Career Fair that the district's CTE Department hosted in partnership with FirstHealth of the Carolinas!

From learning about careers in nursing, radiology, and emergency medicine to exploring opportunities in hospital administration and technology, students discovered just how many ways there are to make a difference in their community and career in the medical field.

Events like this help our students connect what they are learning in the classroom to real-world career paths which inspires them to dream big and think about how they can serve their community in the future.

At Broadway Elementary, students recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a colorful and joy-filled parade, complete with music, flags, and pride in their cultures!

Events like this do more than simply celebrate diversity, they help students feel seen, valued, and connected. When children can share their heritage and learn about others, it builds empathy, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging in their school community.

At Lee County Schools, we know that student well-being thrives in environments where every voice is heard and every culture is honored. That's exactly what Broadway Elementary's celebration was all about.

This week we're excited to highlight one of the friendly faces who keep things running smoothly behind the scenes. Meet Cris Godwin, Bookkeeper at Greenwood Elementary!

Ms. Godwin began her journey with LCS in 2004 as a teacher assistant at Tramway before joining Greenwood Elementary as Office Support. Over the years, she's become a cornerstone of the school community, greeting families, supporting staff, and spreading kindness daily.

Throughout her two decades of service, she's built countless connections - from comforting nervous kindergartners to celebrating the small moments that students never forget. "Sometimes you don't realize you've made an impact, but after twenty years, those little moments add up to quite a lot," she reflected.

Looking back, she's most proud of helping create a welcoming environment for everyone who walks through Greenwood's doors. Her advice for anyone considering joining Lee County Schools? "You're not just accepting a job. You're joining a community. Whether you are in the classroom or the office, you can make a difference every single day."

Thank you, Ms. Godwin, for 20-plus incredible years of service, dedication, and heart. Greenwood and all of Lee County Schools are better because of you!

Community Partners Helping Students Thrive

So much of what it takes to make a school successful happens beyond the classroom walls. We're incredibly thankful for the community partners who make it possible!

One amazing example is Life Springs Church, whose volunteers provide small group tutoring each week for some students at J.R. Ingram and W.B. Wicker. From reading and math to mental health and life skills like introducing yourself with confidence, these sessions offer meaningful, personal support that helps students grow academically and socially.

This kind of partnership strengthens not only our schools but our entire community.

A huge THANK YOU to all of our community partners who lift up students and staff across Lee County - together, we're building bright futures!

At Floyd L. Knight, students experience the joy of movement and accomplishment thanks to Exceptional Children P.E. teacher Cassie Lynch. She is known as a creative, compassionate educator who goes above and beyond to make every activity accessible and fun for her students.

"Seeing the kids get excited when they get to do new things is amazing," Lynch said. "We get to be so creative and use devices and contraptions to adapt and modify games to give them opportunities to do things in a different way. Just being part of their journey and seeing them accomplish new things is special."

Whether she is building adaptive tools, crafting an entire "Falcon Olympics" or reimagining classic games, Mrs. Lynch and her team ensure that every student - regardless of ability - gets to experience success, teamwork, and joy in PE.

Thank you, Mrs. Lynch, for inspiring your students through movement, innovation, and heart!
