For Ashley Matsik, literacy specialist at Deep River Elementary School, education has always been about relationships, collaboration, and making sure every child feels supported. With 18 years experience in teaching, the last 10 of those at Deep River, Matsik says that one of the most meaningful aspects of her work is the strong sense of family that defines her school community.
"I think the best part is that this is a family," she shared. "We all look after the kids. From the bus drivers in the morning to the custodials and cafeteria workers around the school, everyone here at Deep River sees it as 'our kids,' and just want to help them be their best."
That shared commitment drives Ashley's work each day. She emphasizes creativity and engagement, always looking for ways to make learning meaningful and enjoyable for students. "We care about what our kids need and we look for fun ways to try and get that for them," she explained. "We try to make it exciting for the kids, make it fun for them instead of just something that they have to do."
Matsik also values the relationships she has built with her colleagues. "Your coworkers here at Deep River really do become your family," she explained. "We build relationships with one another so we can really work together in the best way possible to give kids the best chance at success. Our kids have a lot of needs so it truly does take all of us, but when we work together, it really does make a difference for our students."
In addition to her role at Deep River, Ashley has spent the past 10 years working with Project Lift Off, a summer initiative started by her mother Pam Mann that supports summer enrichment for at risk students from across the district. As much as she loves teaching, the Project Lift Off work is a little extra special for her. "Giving these students an opportunity in the summer to be able to have experiences that many other families are able to do, it really is a special thing for me," she said. "It is just so fun to not necessarily have a curriculum with them in the summer, but to get to do real-life learning with them while working alongside some great staff from across the county."
Building relationships with Project Lift Off families throughout the year is another highlight. "We just had our Project Lift Off Christmas Dinner with the families. Being able to support them and their students and facilitate experiences for the students is really a passion for me," Matsik shared.
As a literacy specialist, Matsik appreciates the opportunity to work not only with students, but also with her fellow teachers. "The biggest difference for me in this role is being able to work with adults in addition to students," she said. "I get the chance to help find resources and fine-tune their lessons to be the best they can be. I feel like this role gives me a chance to help more students because I can help teachers be in the best position to help a student grow."
At the heart of everything Matsik does is a belief in her students and their potential. "I want each kid to know that they are special," she indicated. "I want them to know that no matter what life throws at them, they are capable ... Knowing that they are capable, that they can work hard, and that they have people supporting them - I really believe that can be their ticket to a better future."
Deep River Elementary is fortunate to have Mrs. Matsik's passion, leadership and unwavering commitment to students and families making a difference each day.
