Brooke Simmons is a standout student-athlete at SLHS, known for her dedication, sportsmanship, and passion for competition. She has earned MVP honors in both cross country and track, proving her commitment and excellence across multiple sports.
Though many see cross country as an individual sport, Brooke sees it differently. “Without my teammates, I would have no motivation,” she says. Their support and encouragement have helped push her through even the most challenging races.
In addition to cross country and track, Brooke plays travel softball for the Lady Panthers. One of her favorite pre-game rituals is warming up with the same throwing partner and ending with a pitch—something that helps her focus and prepare mentally for the game.
Balancing school and athletics hasn’t been easy. “It’s hard to keep up with school and my sports, but I make it work,” she says. Her time management and discipline help her succeed on the field and in the classroom.
When the pressure builds, Brooke stays grounded by focusing on what she can control. “I just focus on what’s in my control and do my best,” she says. That mindset has helped her handle stress and stay present in the moment.
She’s also learned some lasting life lessons through sports—one of the biggest being: “You can play your best and give it everything you’ve got—and still lose and that is just a part of life.” It's a tough truth, but one that has made her stronger.
She even remembers receiving some wild advice along the way. The weirdest? “Keep running until you throw up!” It's extreme, but it shows just how far athletes are sometimes pushed in pursuit of success.
A teacher and coach who has made a lasting impression on Brooke is Mrs. Showalter, her cross country coach. Brooke describes her as a strong leader, a family woman, and someone who is always kind and supportive. Her guidance, on and off the course, has meant a lot to Brooke during her high school journey.
When asked how her relationship with sports has changed over time, Brooke gives a deeply honest answer. She says she used to love playing and fought hard to come back from injuries—but eventually, burnout set in, and she lost that love for the game. Still, she found joy in her senior year playing alongside her friends—teammates she’ll never step on a field with again. It’s a bittersweet but meaningful ending to a big part of her life. What Brooke cherishes most about SLHS are the friendships she’s made along the way.
Brooke Simmons leaves a legacy of resilience, heart, and dedication. SLHS is proud to have her as a student, teammate, and leader in the school community.
