Everyone knows that at LEC we have amazing students, but we know that they couldn't be as amazing as they are without the support of super awesome parents! At LEC , we believe that when parents and schools work together, students have the best chance for success. As part of parent week, we will be shining the spotlight on some of our LEC Parents to highlight the importance of school and parent partnerships.
Meet Joy Velasco
Mrs. Velasco is mom to LEC class of 2022 alumni, Joey Velasco. Joey now proudly serves our country in the United States Navy. During Joey's time at LEC, Joy remained connected to her sons teachers and the LEC staff, and worked as a true partner to ensure he had the best experience possible. Team work truly does make the dream work! Thank you Mrs. Velasco for being such a supportive member of our team!
1. Why did you choose LEC for your child?
To be honest, I don’t think that I chose it. I discussed it with my son, Joey in 6th and 7th grade. He wasn’t ready to think about high school at the time. I wasn’t aware until the afternoon that LEC representatives had come to talk to the 8th graders, but Joey came home excited about school. He announced that LEC is where he knew he was meant to go to. We did some research and agreed that it was a perfect opportunity for him. Seeing our child excited about school… that was a rare occurrence if it ever happened. We spoke to other parents and students and knew it would be a great fit.
2. What is/was your most memorable experience during your child's time here?
This is difficult to answer… I have many! Watching Joey participate in Quiz Bowl, the talent show, sports competition days, and going to prom are just a few. However, watching and hearing about his friendships, teacher relationships and the academic rigor are my most favorite. He learned so much academically and personally, and I know that the LEC experience played a major role!
3. What advice do you have for other parents considering LEC?
Be patient and involved! The students are at an age where they need to find their path. Juggling the work, responsibilities and freedoms can be difficult for some. Give them grace to struggle but support to keep them on track.
4.Is there anything you'd like to add/share/shout out?
It is a place to explore their options and maybe they need to try out new things to determine their path. The teachers are part of your child’s team. They want them to succeed and were great at answering questions. The principal is also part of your child’s team and is invested in all of the students. I am forever grateful for LEC for being part of my village and being part of shaping Joey into the amazing young man he is.
