The recently enacted Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will change the way over-the-counter medications and other non-prescription items are reimbursed through flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts and health reimbursement arrangements. Beginning Jan. 1, pain relievers, cough medicines, acid controllers, allergy medicines and more will require a prescription or letter of medical necessity from a physician to be eligible for reimbursement.
