Imagine more than one hundred people dressed in the same outfit, some slightly different, but mainly identical, shouting in unison this phrase from a commonly modified cadence. It echoes and rings through the ears of not only the onlookers of our cadets at parades and competitions, but it also influences our Lee County Army JROTC cadets by letting them know who they are as individuals as well as a group .

At first glance, many different people see our cadets in uniform and ask questions as to why their schoolmates, friends, students and fellow residents of the United States are wearing a uniform, marching and participating in leadership classes at a high school. Many responses are heard, such as "It makes me feel more confident about myself," or "It gives me a sense of responsibility." All answers are of merit and respected, but the greatest of all answers comes from the actual Army JROTC mission statement:

 "To motivate young people to be better citizens."

How do you become a better citizen?  By developing these core abilities:

•  Build your capacity for life-long learning.

• Communicate using verbal, non-verbal, visual, and written techniques.

• Take responsibility for your actions and choices.

• Do your share as a good citizen in your school, community, country, and the world.

• Treat self and others with respect.

• Apply critical thinking techniques.

 In JROTC, you will become a more confident and empathetic leader and citizen who is able to make good decisions for yourself and those around you.  Sometimes, it is not easy but it is usually fun!
