What is AIG?

The Academically-Intellectually Gifted (AIG) program is composed of students who, as defined by the State of North Carolina, “perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both the intellectual areas and specific academic fields.” 

Are high school students still part of the AIG program?

Yes! Students who were previously identified as AIG in elementary school or middle school are still identified as AIG students in high school, as AIG records follow students as they move to higher grades. For students transferring to Lee County Schools from another district or state, parents should indicate during registration whether their student is identified as AIG. 

What does being identified as AIG mean in high school?

At the high school level, AIG students are offered a wide variety of advanced coursework and academic pathways. High school AIG students may self-select the courses and programs that best fit their specific academic and intellectual needs and goals. We highly recommend that AIG students register for the appropriate advanced courses in their areas of identification to receive instruction differentiated to their academic and intellectual needs, such as Honors courses, Advanced Placement courses, International Baccalaureate courses (at LCHS), or dual enrollment courses.
