Mission Statement

The mission of Floyd L. Knight is to prepare each student to use self-determination in making informed decisions as he/she functions as independently as possible in home, school, and community settings.

FLK will provide a safe and orderly environment where all students can learn and all teachers can teach without the threat of violence, or other disruptive incidents.

The chief priority for Floyd L. Knight is to prepare each student for functional independence in the home, school and community.

Each student is valued individual with unique learning characteristics, strengths, skills and interest that can be developed through high performance expectations for students and staff.

Students learn best when they have appropriate opportunities for success.

Curriculum and instructional practices should incorporate a variety of learning activities to accommodate differences in learning styles.

Clear goals and high expectations for student achievement should guide the development of the curriculum and the design of instructional strategies and learning activities.

A safe and physically comfortable environment promotes student learning.

Age appropriate learning experiences in daily living, vocational, community experiences, recreation and leisure and functional academic domains are designed to prepare students to use self determination as they choose adult roles.

Through collaborative efforts of staff, parents. community service providers and students (whenever appropriate) individual learning goals are established which enhance student progress toward adult life and integration with non-disabled peers.

Teachers, staff, administrators, parents, students and community members share in the responsibility for providing a supportive learning environment.

Success requires a commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly environment, while using best practice teaching techniques, strengthening parent involvement and maintaining an ongoing effort to establish partnerships with same age non-disabled peers.

The commitment to continuous improvement is imperative if our school is going to enable students to become confident, self-directed, lifelong learners.

Our continued success requires cooperation among parents, school and community.
