Bullock Systems

At B.T. Bullock Elementary, we understand the importance of using science- and evidence-based practices to teach children to read.  Our teachers underwent training in Reading Research to Classroom Practice--a 40 hour course on the science of teaching reading--prior to the pandemic.  We are excited to embark on LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training in the Fall of 2022.  LETRS®  is professional learning that provides educators and administrators with deep knowledge to be literacy and language experts in the science of reading from renowned literacy experts: Dr. Louisa Moats, Dr. Carol Tolman, and Dr. Lucy Hart Paulson.  LETRS teaches the skills needed to master the fundamentals of reading instruction—phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and language.

Science of Reading

We are committed to aligning our instruction to the 5 pillars of reading that were clearly defined in the Report of the National Reading Panel: Teaching Children to Read. In 1997, Congress asked the "Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), in consultation with the Secretary of Education, to convene a national panel to assess the status of research-based knowledge, including the effectiveness of various approaches to teaching children to read.  Those results were published in the aforementioned report. We are committed to using the research published in that report to help frame reading instruction to benefit all learners.

House System

At B.T. Bullock, we have incorporated the house system, inspired by Ron Clark Academy. Our house system was developed to help cultivate our school environment & build a culture of support & family throughout our whole school. We have four houses, which each represent different qualities and strengths and you will learn more about them below. All students and staff are sorted into houses as they arrive to become part of our Bullock family. Our back lobby has a wheel that everyone gets to spin to be placed in a house. Once you have been placed in a house, it is your house forever! Our houses provide relationships, academic success and a culture of happiness, fun and competitiveness. Students can earn house points by following our school matrix-being respectful, responsible and safe. We celebrate our houses many times throughout the year, including quarterly house parties, which consist of the house that has received the most points.
