Most people pay for college by filling out a FAFSA and getting need-based aid, NOT necessarily scholarships. Filing a FAFSA guarantees you will get some money for college if your family makes below a certain amount per year. Applying for scholarships provides no guarantee!

You may be surprised by how affordable high selective colleges might be! On the other hand... colleges that send you a lot of mail may not be the best deal. NEVER enroll at a college before receiving your financial aid award letter- that's like buying a car without knowing how much it costs!
