Lateral Entry License Information (pdf) Lateral entry teachers are employed when the pool of available licensed teachers is exhausted. Lateral entry teachers are therefore most likely to be employed late in the summer and in content areas where there is a shortage of teachers. The shortage of teachers is greatest, particularly, in the areas of math, science, special education, and middle grades.

Our certified and classified vacancies are updated twice daily. If you have questions about vacancies, please feel free to contact the Human Resources Department at 919-774-6226. We will be happy to answer any questions you have about openings, the application process and licensure issues.

By clicking on the appropriate link, you are taken to the NCPublicSchools.org website, which carries our current vacancy listings. Vacancies are listed in alphabetical order and specific detail information regarding each vacancy may be viewed by clicking on the position title. Choose the proper link as defined below:


Licensed : Select the 'Licensed' link if you wish to see a listing of vacancies which require a professional educator's license. Examples of Licensed positions include: Teacher, Principal, Assistant Principal, Superintendent, Media Coordinator, Counselor, School Social Worker, Workforce Development Instructor, and Speech Language Pathologist. Note: Currently holding a NC educator's license is NOT a prerequisite for applying for a licensed position.

Classified: Select the 'Classified' link if you wish to see a listing of vacancies which do not require a North Carolina educator's license. Examples of classified positions include: Instructional (Teacher) Assistant, Office Support, Tutor, Custodian, Food Service Manager or Assistant, Maintenance Supervisor or Worker.

Bus Driver:  Select the 'Bus Driver' link if you wish to see a listing of vacant bus driving positions. Bus Driver positions include: Regular Bus Driver, Exceptional Children Bus Driver, Activity Bus Driver, and Bus Safety Assistant.

Substitutes:  We do not post openings for substitutes.  We accept applications for substitutes throughout the year.  Please complete the NC DPI on-line application for substitutes.  The Human Resources Office evaluates experience/application.  Reference checks are completed on those who best match the substitute criteria (those whose training and experience is comparable to training/experience required by the NC Teacher Licensure Standards).  Preference given to college graduates with prior teaching experience, teacher training, or other special qualifications in subject area.   If you are selected, you will be sent an invitation letter to attend a group orientation.  After attending orientation, your name will be placed on a list which will go before the next Board of Education meeting for approval of employment.  After the board approves the substitute list, you will be placed on the master substitute list and you will be able to start substituting in Lee County.

The Interview and Employment Process

When vacancies occur, interviews are arranged with selected applicants holding proper qualifications. The principal/hiring administrator screens applications and selects eligible candidates for interview. After interviewing these candidates, the principal/hiring administrator and his/her interview team makes a recommendation to the Human Resources Officer. Offers of employment are extended from Human Resources.
