  • Lee County Schools Revises 2013-14 School Calendars

15 Minutes Added to School Day for Snow Make-Up; Election Day Made a Teacher Workday

SANFORD Lee County Schools’ students will not lose their spring break or go to school on Saturdays under a make-up plan for days missed in February due to snow.  The plan, approved by the Lee County Board of Education last night, adds 15 minutes to the school day.  The longer school day will begin on March 4 and continue through June 9 for students on the traditional, year-round and Lee Early College calendars.

State calendar law allows school districts the option of 185 school days or 1025 instructional hours for students.  The additional minutes added to the school day will allow the district to meet the hour requirement.  While principals will have the flexibility to use the 15 minutes as they think best works at their school, the time will be incorporated into instructional activities and not used to lengthen lunch periods or recess.

The Board of Education also revised the traditional and year-round calendars to add a teacher workday on Election Day - Tuesday, May 6.  Nine schools in the district are used by the Lee County Board of Elections as polling places.  This change was prompted by the volume of voters expected at the polls during the May primary.

What this means for SLMS is that our dismissal time will be 2:45 instead of 2:30.
This will go into effect March 4th and will be in place through the end of the school year.
